Activities
Training42phase: Consortium Meeting
The project consortium met for a full day of meetings – scientific advisory board meeting, project consortium meeting, and supervisory board meeting – on 28 November 2025 at CentraleSupelec in Paris, France.
Each doctoral candidate presented their overall progress, upcoming plans, and areas of collaboration.
The Scientific Advisory Board, whose role is to keep a critical eye on all project activities, continues to see Training42phase as a highly relevant project.
Training School 3: Integrating AI into Engineering Systems using MATLAB and Simulink
On 24 - 28 Nov. 2025, the doctoral candidates attended two different courses at CentraleSupelec in Paris, France.
Course 1: “Integrating AI into Engineering Systems using MATLAB and Simulink.”
- The doctoral candidates gained hands-on exposure to using MATLAB and Simulink as tools to implement machine learning techniques into engineering systems.
- They obtained deeper insights into MATLAB–Python integration, enabling more flexible workflows that combine the strengths of both environments.
- They learned how to prepare and preprocess engineering data, train machine learning models, and validate their performance within MATLAB before integrating them into Simulink models.
- They explored and saw a demonstration of how to deploy and test AI-enabled control and monitoring algorithms in simulation, supporting rapid prototyping and verification of intelligent engineering systems.
Course 2: Academic Writing
- The doctoral candidates gained insights into the methods of academic writing and common pitfalls
- They practiced techniques for improving clarity, coherence, and academic tone, with a focus on precise language, logical flow of arguments, and proper use of citations and references.
Presentation at the 21st Multiphase Flow Conference and Short course
Doctoral candidate Andrés Vignolo Cortabarría, one of our PhD researchers at Imperial College London, successfully presented his research at the 21st Multiphase Flow Conference and Short course, 10-15 November 2025 in Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) in Germany.
Andrés Vignolo Cortabarría presented "On the importance of initial conditions for high-speed droplet impact CFD simulations", co-authored with Prof. David Nowell, Imperial College London and Prof. Giacomo Persico, Politecnico di Milano.
Training school 4: Data-driven approaches to uncertain optimization and decision-making
On September 1-5, 2025, the DC's attended the PhD course at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, which introduced the students to data-driven approaches and showed them how to represent a viable solution methodology in a variety of optimization problems involving uncertainty.
ASME Turbo Expo 2025, June 16–20, 2025, Memphis, Tennessee
Papers presented:
- "Advancing Turbomachinery Meanline Modeling and Optimization with Automatic Differentiation", Authored by Srinivas Diwanji, Lasse Borg Anderson, Roberto Agromayor, and Fredrik Haglind
- "A Hyperbolic One-Dimensional Model for Two-Phase Flows in Converging-Diverging Nozzles", Authored by Andrea Cioffi, Alberto Bergamin, Roberto Agromayor, and Fredrik Haglind
The doctoral candidates met turbomachinery enthusiasts from all over the world and exchanged interesting ideas. This interaction stimulated meaningful collaborations and contributed to the advancement of ongoing research initiatives.
Training School 2
On June 3-4, 2025, the DC's attended the second Training42Phase Training School at Danfoss. During the modelling of two-phase flows with a strong focus on industrial applications was explored. The lectures offered in-depth insights into advanced thermodynamic modelling, the use of working fluids in refrigeration systems, and Danfoss’s experimental approach to system design and validation.
Training School 1
On April 26-28, 2025, the DCs attended the first Training42Phase Training School at DTU. Focusing on soft skills, the program covered communication skills, SoMe, research ethics, diversity, research data management and Open Science. The first bricks were laid for truly great research projects.
Midterm Meeting at DTU
A successful midterm meeting was held on April 24-25, 2025, with a meet-and-greet with the doctoral candidates, partners, and associated partners. The two days included interesting presentations from project participants as well as discussions, and important info on good practice in MSCA-doctoral network projects was shared by the EU Project Officer Nina Poumpolova.
